Roof Warranty Information

HomeBuild 10-Year Labor Warranty and Owens Corning Limited Lifetime Coverage

Every HomeBuild roof warranty includes three layers of written protection: a 10-Year HomeBuild Labor Warranty, the HomeBuild VIP Protection Program, and the Owens Corning Standard Product Limited Lifetime Warranty on TruDefinition Duration AR shingles. Here is exactly what each one covers.

A roof replacement is one of the largest investments a Chicagoland homeowner makes.

Understanding what warranty protection comes with that investment — before you sign a contract — tells you a great deal about the contractor you are evaluating.

HomeBuild roof warranty written protection - roofing contractor Chicago suburbs

HomeBuild Roofing provides three layers of written warranty protection on every TruDefinition Duration AR installation:

a standard 10-Year HomeBuild Labor Warranty on installation workmanship, the HomeBuild VIP Protection Program with tiered additional coverage based on project value, and the Owens Corning Standard Product Limited Lifetime Warranty on the materials themselves.

This page explains all three in plain language — what each covers, what each requires, and what you receive in writing at project completion.

What Warranty Protection Comes With a HomeBuild Roof Installation?

Every HomeBuild TruDefinition Duration AR installation includes three warranty layers:

Owens Corning Limited Lifetime Warranty — covers manufacturing defects in TruDefinition Duration AR shingles. Full TRU PROtection coverage for the first 10 years, prorated coverage after that, for as long as the original homeowner owns the home.

Every HomeBuild Installation Comes With Three Distinct Warranty Layers

For homeowners in Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, and across the Northwest suburbs, understanding the difference between these three layers resolves most questions about what is covered and who to call if a problem appears.

HomeBuild 10-Year Labor Warranty - roofing contractor Chicago

Layer 1:
HomeBuild 10-Year Labor Warranty

This is HomeBuild’s direct commitment to the quality of installation. It covers problems that originate in how the roof was installed — not in the materials and not in an external storm event.

What it covers: leaks caused by improper flashing installation, shingle blow-off traceable to fastening errors, sealant and waterproofing failures at penetrations, and any other defect that a roof inspector would identify as an installation quality issue rather than a material defect.

What it does not cover: manufacturing defects in the materials (that is the OC warranty), damage caused by storm events (that is homeowners insurance), or normal wear after 10 years.

This is a written warranty. You receive it at project completion.

HomeBuild VIP Protection Program - roof warranty Chicago suburbs

Layer 2:
HomeBuild VIP Protection Program

The VIP Protection Program is an additional complimentary protection plan provided on top of the standard 10-year labor warranty. The tier you receive is determined automatically by your project value.

  • HomeBuild Essential Plan — 1 year of additional protection. Projects up to $20,000.
  • HomeBuild Preferred Plan — 2 years of additional protection. Projects $20,000 to $50,000.
  • HomeBuild Premier Plan — 5 years of additional protection. Projects over $50,000.

What VIP Protection covers (all tiers):

  • Flashing integrity and performance
  • Shingle blow-off resistance
  • Ridge caps, vents, drip edges, and roof penetration components
  • Sealant and waterproofing performance
  • Minor service adjustment inspections
  • Preventative maintenance adjustments if needed
  • Limited accidental damage coverage for operational roofing components

The VIP Protection Program sits on top of the 10-year labor warranty — it does not replace it. Together, they provide layered workmanship coverage that extends through the early years of the roof’s service life when installation-related issues, if any, are most likely to surface.

Owens Corning Standard Product Limited Lifetime Warranty - HomeBuild roofing

Layer 3:
Owens Corning Standard Product Limited Lifetime Warranty

Issued directly by Owens Corning to the homeowner. Covers manufacturing defects in TruDefinition Duration AR shingles and qualifying OC system components. This warranty registration is filed by HomeBuild on the homeowner’s behalf at project completion — you receive a physical warranty registration document with a unique registration number.

The Owens Corning Limited Lifetime Warranty - What TRU PROtection Means in Practice

The OC warranty document is detailed, but its structure is straightforward once you understand the two coverage periods.

Owens Corning TRU PROtection roof warranty period - HomeBuild roofing contractor

1

TRU PROtection Period - Years 1 through 10:

This is the strongest phase of the OC warranty. During the first 10 years, Owens Corning covers 100% of the cost to repair or replace defective shingles and qualifying components, including the labor required to do so. If a manufacturing defect causes a problem in year 3, Owens Corning compensates for materials and the labor to fix them.

2

Prorated Period - After Year 10:

Once the TRU PROtection period expires, coverage shifts to a prorated structure. Owens Corning covers a portion of the replacement material cost — starting at 80% in year 11 and reducing by 2% each year through year 40. Labor is no longer covered during the prorated period. The warranty remains in effect for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, but the compensation value decreases over time.

3

Wind Resistance - 130 MPH for 15 Years:

The wind resistance warranty covers shingle blow-off at winds up to 130 MPH — but only for 15 years from installation, and only when shingles are installed to OC specifications. After year 15, wind resistance warranty coverage expires even if the materials warranty continues.

4

Algae Resistance (AR) - 25 Years:

TruDefinition Duration AR shingles include 25-year algae resistance coverage. The first 10 years are non-prorated — Owens Corning covers material and labor costs for qualifying algae discoloration. Years 11 through 25 are prorated on materials only.

What the warranty does not cover:

  • Acts of God: hail, storm winds over the rated maximum, ice damming beyond the leak barrier coverage area
  • Improper installation (this is the contractor’s — HomeBuild’s — responsibility)
  • Inadequate ventilation causing heat damage
  • Damage from foot traffic, falling objects, or alterations after installation
  • Non-OC components: flashing, fasteners, pipe boots, wood decking

Important claims process note:
The OC warranty requires that claims be filed within 30 days of discovering the problem. Do not repair or replace OC products before Owens Corning has made a determination on the claim — doing so may result in denial.

Three Conditions That Void OC Warranty Coverage - All Three Are Addressed in HomeBuild's Standard Process

For homeowners in Palatine, Arlington Heights, and across the Northwest suburbs, these are the three conditions that most frequently come up in OC warranty disputes — and all three are within the contractor’s control at installation.

1

Inadequate attic ventilation.

The OC warranty explicitly excludes damage caused by improper or inadequate roof ventilation. An attic running at 150°F in a Chicagoland summer degrades shingles from below — and OC treats that as an installation condition failure, not a manufacturing defect.
HomeBuild assesses attic ventilation on every project before new materials are installed.

If the existing system is deficient, we document it in writing and correct it as part of the installation scope. A new roof installed over a deficient ventilation system may carry a warranty that is void from day one.

2

Installation not to manufacturer specifications.

The wind resistance warranty component requires installation to OC’s published nailing pattern, fastener type, and placement specifications. Shingles fastened incorrectly — even by a small margin — void the wind warranty. HomeBuild installs to OC specifications on every project, using the SureNail nailing zone as the defined target.

3

Non-OC system components.

The OC component warranty requires three or more qualifying OC components installed alongside the shingles — hip and ridge shingles, synthetic underlayment, VentSure ventilation products, starter shingles, and/or WeatherLock ice and water barrier. If fewer than three qualifying components are used, each component reverts to its individual warranty rather than the system warranty. HomeBuild installs a complete Owens Corning system on every project.

The OC Warranty Transfers Once - With a 60-Day Window After Closing

For homeowners in Chicagoland who are planning to sell their home, the OC warranty transfer process is straightforward — but time-sensitive.

The Owens Corning Limited Lifetime Warranty can be transferred one time to the next owner of the property. To transfer, the new owner must contact Owens Corning within 60 days of the real estate transfer and provide proof of purchase and installation date.

Practical note for sellers: Providing a buyer with the OC warranty registration number, the warranty document, the HomeBuild 10-year labor warranty, the VIP Protection Program certificate, and the installation photo record is one of the most effective disclosure packages a Chicagoland seller can include. A roof with documented warranty protection and a registered OC warranty number is a tangible selling point.

Neither Warranty Covers Storm Damage - That Is What Homeowners Insurance Is For

This is the most common warranty misconception HomeBuild encounters from homeowners across Wheaton, Elmhurst, and the West suburbs — and it is worth stating plainly before any problem arises.

Storm damage on residential roof - not covered by roof warranty, covered by homeowners insurance Chicago

Storm damage - hail impact, wind blow-off caused by a storm event, ice damming, water intrusion during a storm, or damage from debris - is not covered by the OC Limited Lifetime Warranty or by the HomeBuild Labor Warranty.

The OC warranty document explicitly lists “Acts of God, such as hail, strong storms or winds over the maximum wind speed” in the “What Is Not Covered” section.

Storm damage is covered by homeowners insurance as a sudden and unexpected weather peril. The claim goes to your insurance carrier.

The practical three-way distinction:

  • Leak from improper flashing installation → HomeBuild Labor Warranty / VIP Protection. Call HomeBuild.
  • Shingle delamination from a manufacturing defect → OC Limited Lifetime Warranty. Contact Owens Corning through HomeBuild.
  • Damage from a hail event or wind storm → Homeowners insurance. File a claim.

Most post-storm calls to roofing contractors involve insurance claims — not warranty claims. HomeBuild handles the full storm damage and insurance claim process: free inspection, photo documentation, adjuster accompaniment, and supplement filing.

What warranty protection comes with a HomeBuild roof installation?

Every HomeBuild installation includes three layers: a 10-Year Labor Warranty on workmanship, the HomeBuild VIP Protection Program with tiered additional coverage, and the Owens Corning Standard Product Limited Lifetime Warranty on TruDefinition Duration AR shingles.

It covers defects caused by installation workmanship — improper flashing, shingle blow-off from fastening errors, sealant failures at penetrations. It does not cover material defects (OC warranty) or storm damage (homeowners insurance).

HomeBuild Roofing installs Owens Corning shingles, including the Duration® series with SureNail® Technology. Owens Corning is one of the most recognized residential roofing brands in North America, backed by industry-leading manufacturer warranties.

An additional complimentary protection plan on top of the 10-year labor warranty. Three tiers based on project value: Essential (1 year, up to $20k), Preferred (2 years, $20k-$50k), Premier (5 years, over $50k).

Yes – once, within 60 days of closing. If transferred during the TRU PROtection perid (years 1-10), the new owner receives full remaining coverage. If transferred after year 10, the new owner receives 2 years of coverage.

10-Year Labor Warranty. VIP Protection Program. Owens Corning Limited Lifetime on materials. Every HomeBuild installation delivers all three in writing — backed by 20+ years in Chicagoland and 180+ verified five-star reviews.
